Sarah Owen and Brighton University students were joined in Hastings by three Labour Lords (Lord Bassam, Lord Hunt and Lord Jones) in calling for the Southern Trains Unizone student discount ticket to be extended to Hastings.
On the steps of the Hastings campus they held aloft a giant Unizone ticket and signs calling for the zone to be extended.
“I’m proud to stand with students to get a fairer deal for people studying in Hastings, and thank Lords Bassam, Hunt and Jones for their support in calling for the Unizone to be extended to benefit students in Hastings.”
Lord Steve Bassam of Brighton said,
“I’m backing hard-pressed Hastings students in their struggle to stop the financial discrimination against students here. It’s time for Southern Trains to extend the Unizone to Hastings.”
Lady Maggie Jones, Labour’s Education spokesperson in the Lords said,
“It’s great to stand alongside students and Sarah Owen in support of this campaign to get the Unizone extended to Hastings.”
Sophie Cohen, Brighton University Students Union Campus & Communications Officer said,
“Extending the Unizone will impact on so many students at the University of Brighton so we will continue to campaign for affordable student transport – we urge those holding the reins not to sweep this under the carpet.”
Southern Trains have said that the change is ‘under active consideration’. The campaign continues.
