“Naturally I am gutted. Not for myself, but for our fantastic team of volunteers, the NHS, our local services and the people who needed Labour most.
“Every bit of my heart thanks the hundreds of volunteers who have knocked on doors, made the calls, delivered our leaflets, stuffed our envelopes and run our committee rooms over the last few years, as well as yesterday.
“I am genuinely the luckiest person in the world to have the team of friends, officers and volunteers that make up Hastings & Rye Labour Party. As a team, we are devastated to have lost Jeremy Birch, and as a team, we are ever united in that loss. I knew yesterday was going to be tough, but thank you to everyone who pulled together to get us through.
“But our fight isn’t over – if we want a better, fairer future for Hastings & Rye we have to fight for it and we will continue to do that together!”
